A film based on the bad times during Idi Amin's Uganda swept the inaugural Uganda Film Festival awards, winning in four categories.

It was organized by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to recognize and award the great job Ugandan actors are doing to make the film industry thrive, even with no support from the local market.

The Chief Judge, Sister Dominic Dipio, Associate Professor of Literature and Film at Makerere University, explained that many films were submitted but few where chosen.

"We chose few not because the ones left out were the bad, but because of the few categories since the industry hasn't reached the level of crowning best actor and actress," she said.

"I believe that a lot of talent is not yet exposed, so before they explore and promote all the talent there is in Uganda, awarding individuals would be out of the equation."

However, Rosie Motene, one of the judges from South Africa, said that if that category was considered at the moment, Peter Odeke would be the Best Actor and Cleopatra Koheirwe, famously known for her role in The Last King of Scotland, would be the best actress.

She commended the Ugandan actors for their zeal and creativity and encouraged them not to replicate what they see in the western country movies, but rather to tell the stories of the rich Uganda culture.

The event was on invitation basis and the people invited apart from the actors were those that will presumably play part in the change, promotion and marketing of the face of the Ugandan film industry.

Among the notable invited guests were the Minister of I.C.T, Hon. Nyombi Tembo, Maggie Kigozi and several big names from both the media and Film industry.
