{UAH} WHY IS THIS NEW TO KAYIHURA: Police warns officers over illegal operations
Police authorities have warned all officers against staging illegal operations in the city to extort money from the public, especially bodaboda motorcyclists.
The Kampala Metropolitan community Liaison Officer, Anatoli Muleterwa, said the officers are misusing the recently-issued regulations banning bodaboda cyclists from carrying two passengers, animals and big loads to extort money.
"Due to a public outcry, we got information that a group of police officers under Field Force Unit (FFU), plain-clothes operatives and officers on general duties are arresting people illegally at the Clock Tower and around the city without charging them but extorting money," he said.
Muleterwa said after receiving the information, they deployed their intelligence operatives in the city and were able to arrest some officers found operating illegally at 9pm on Entebbe road. Some, he added, however, escaped during the arrest fracas.
"When we contacted the division police commanders (DPCs) and O/C traffic in Katwe police station and other police posts in the city, they denied to have deployed them," Muleterwa said. "They said these officers have been arresting people daily and causing a lot of traffic jam in the city."
At the time of their arrest, the suspects were found with boda boda motorcycles and about Shs 1.5m.
