'Child sheltered under gourd, Gulu' ca. 1930
2.Baghdad was founded in 762 by the caliph al-Mansur. Within 30 years it had a population of over one million & was the world's largest city.Devastation of Baghdad by the Mongols brought the curtain down on the almost 5 centuries long golden age of the Muslim world, and slowly scholarship in art and science declined among the Muslims.
3.Ottoman cartographer Piri Reis's 16th century map of Europe. Note the border between England and Scotland, which were, at the time, still separate countries.The weird thing is the Sinai is not there, one would have thought that that part of the world (Misr) would be well known to them
