We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, to work with Professor Doyne Farmer at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, and with the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. This is a 14 month fixed term position. The successful candidate must be in post on or before 1st January 2015.

The successful candidate will work on a project related to understanding the evolution of technology and economic growth. The main goal of the project is to construct a quantitative theory for technological change that is based on a deeper understanding of what a technology is and how technological improvement springs from the relationships between technologies. Duties will include studying the U.S. patent database, construction of taxonomies for technologies, time series analysis of data on technological improvement, and study of formation of investment portfolios for technologies. There will be a focus on technologies for energy generation and solar energy in particular. You may also be required to teach up to four sets of undergraduate or graduate classes per year.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. submitted at the time of taking up the award in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science or a related subject. Good programming skills are required. Knowledge of complex systems, economics, engineering design, machine learning, statistics, ecology or evolutionary biology are desirable.
