Start with economic integration, not political union

In an interview published in World Policy Journal in 2013, Mo Ibrahim the billionaire philanthropist and chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation was asked a question about regional unions or cooperation in Africa.

He responded that in Africa "We started with what we call regional economic communities, so each African community is moving toward a union. The unions here [Europe] started as economic unions … And that is the right way to do it. It's not necessarily by political union [as Museveni and Kagame want it for East Africa]. It really starts with economic integration [and that is how we should do it in East Africa otherwise we shall be building a house starting with the roof]"(World Policy Journal Spring 2013).
