Githurai residents block Thika highway for the second day
Protests continued Wednesday in Githurai, Nairobi, over the arrest of a police officer in the shooting death of a witness, and dozens of police officers in anti-riot gear were deployed on Thika Road to control the crowds.
Traffic on the usually busy highway was light in the morning as motorists avoided the route.
Later in the afternoon, the protesters blocked the road by placing on it the body of a man who they said had drowned in a nearby disused quarry as he attempted to escape Tuesday's riots.
The rowdy residents also started throwing stones at motorists.
OLD QUARRY
Residents said the body was only recovered from the quarry on Wednesday as it was impossible to do that on Tuesday because of the riots.
Police later collected the body from the road and took it to a mortuary, clearing the road for traffic.
On Tuesday, the protesting residents had blocked the highway, burning tyres and placing stones on the multi-lane road, and matatus plying the Githurai 45 route were all grounded.
The matatus had resumed operations on Wednesday, even as many of the businesses in the area remain closed.
The situation was tense throughout the morning as security officers disrupted any attempts by protesting residents to form big crowds.
Some of the protesters engaged police by throwing stones at them, who in turn lobbed tear gas canisters at them.
