Saudi Arabia: Assurances given on Ebola, MERS amid Haj
Source: eWeekly Middle East | 05 Oct 2014
Two million Muslims are in Mecca at present for the annual Haj pilgrimage, a five-day ritual central to Islam, despite concerns over the SPREAD of the contagious diseases, Ebola and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
However, Saudi Arabia has played down fears about Ebola, having banned pilgrims from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia which are the countries worst affected by the crisis. The decision has excluded 7,400 Muslims.
The Kingdom has not discovered a single case of Ebola so far and is taking all measures to ensure the safety and health of the pilgrims, reported the Associated Press quoting Mr Manal Mansour, the head of the Saudi Health Ministry's Department for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization's emergency committee on Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has said that the MERS outbreak, concentrated on the Arabian Peninsula, did not constitute an international health emergency. The world health authorities said that there is little reason to fear that the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, which began last Thursday, will SPREAD the MERS virus widely around the world.
The emergency panel, which has met seven times, issued its announcement last Wednesday to coincide with the pilgrimage. It urged the Saudi authorities to increase pilgrims' awareness of the disease.
In spring, Saudi Arabia reported hundreds of MERS cases. But there were only 15 known cases from mid-August to late September, WHO said.
No cases of MERS have been reported among pilgrims in Mecca, said Acting Health Minister Adel Fakeih. He said all hospitals and health centers in Mecca are fully prepared to deal with any emergency situations during the Haj season.
At least 301 MERS-related deaths have been reported to WHO out of 853 laboratory-confirmed cases since the disease emerged in Saudi Arabia in 2012. But the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said that 352 deaths have been reported to public health authorities worldwide, out of 887 confirmed cases, reported Reuters.
Meanwhile, the world's worst Ebola outbreak on record had so far killed 3,439 people, WHO said last Friday. Overall, there have been 7,492 cases of the disease recorded
