{UAH} HOW CAN WE AS AFRICANS SET OUR SELVES FROM THIS SILLINESS? Geeeez

DESPITE series of court orders from the Chris Giwa camp in their bids to stop both the August 20 NFF congress and Tuesday’s election into the board of the Nigeria Football Federation in Warri, the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Tammy Danagogo, Tuesday gave reasons why the commission decided to allow the election to take place as ordered by World Football governing body, FIFA.

Danagogo who spoke Tuesday after playing host to the Tanzania ambassador to Nigeria, Daniel Ole Njoolay, in his office, stated that the commission was following all events in the country’s football house, adding that it would address them at the appropriate time.

While admitting that football administration is an NFF affair, Danagogo noted however, that the commission would deem it fit to intervene when it feels that the administrators of the game have relegated the integrity and constitution of Nigeria to the background.

Danagogo disclosed that part of the reason why the NSC refused to take any action on the processes that led to yesterday’s election, which produced Amaju Pinnick as the new NFF president, was because unlike the first court order, which was sent to the commission, he only heard of the recent one and was never issued with a copy.

He stressed that the commission can only work on documented evidence and not on mere rumours. “I am very much aware that NFF election is going on in Warri. I am also aware that FIFA has given a lot of directives and that there are efforts to implement some of those directives.“However, we must know that these things are NFF issues and we try as much as we can as government to allow NFF and their stakeholders run their issues. We only come in when we feel it is compulsory or mandatory to intervene in the public interest. So, if FIFA gave them directive and they said they are implementing it, so be it. At the end whatever comes out of it as it affects football in Nigeria, we will liaise with FIFA to know what the next decision to take.”

“I am also aware that there are statements that court orders have been made, but mind you that legal issue are oftentimes very technical ones. There may be issues of service, true interpretations of these orders and I think lawyers are in a better position to interpret those things.

“You don’t have that order with you, I don’t have it with me too, so we are not in a proper position to say this is this or that. At the end of the day, we will look at all the issues on ground and be able to intervene where necessary in the best interest of this country and our football,” Danagogo said.
