Kasese- The Kasese District chairperson, Lt Col Dura Mawa Muhindo, has blamed high poverty levels in the area on residents who fail to take up development opportunities.
The retired army officer wondered why Kasese, which has plenty of fertile land and irrigation water for crop production, is wallowing in poverty.
"I am tired of being a district chairperson of poor people. Imagine Kasese has a high number of poor people living in poverty because our people have failed to take up development opportunities in the district," he said at a public gathering in Kasese Town recently.
Lt Col Mawa said most of the food sold in Kasese comes from the neighbouring districts and the money acquired goes back to those districts. He said this leaves the population in the district poor.
"Ninety per cent of matooke and meat sold here come from outside the district because our people have taken the wrong mentality of saying land belongs to them. The land you claim cannot feed you," he warned.
He called upon all religious leaders to preach against poverty and promote coffee planting in the district.
The Resident District Commissioner, retired Maj James Mwesigye, blamed the high poverty on the dependence mentality. "People here believe in free things and spend most of their time fighting for land instead of joining hands to fight poverty," Maj Mwesigye said.
