{UAH} The Observer - Besigye compares elites to Judas Iscariot
Frustrated by the opposition's failure to unseat President Museveni over the years, Col Kizza Besigye has again heaped the blame on Uganda's privileged and educated elite.
Besigye told students during the FDC day at Kyambogo University last week, that the elites' greed, selfishness and opportunism had frustrated the fight against "the Museveni dictatorship."
Besigye said the elites were like Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus – because they have betrayed their country. They were, he said, part of the problem rather than the solution. Organised by the FDC Students' Union, the FDC day was held under the theme: "The role of intellectuals in shaping the future of Uganda."
Said Besigye: "In Uganda, if you put money on a rat trap, you will, rest assured, find elite."
Besigye has previously attacked the educated elite for failing to embrace his aggressive campaign against the Museveni government. On her part, Ingrid Turinawe, head of the FDC Women's League, castigated university student leaders for accepting to be used by the NRM government. Turinawe said most former university guild presidents had been co-opted by State House.
FDC President Mugisha Muntu asked students to help the party capture the rural vote ahead of the 2016 general elections. On October 17, the party resolved during its national council in Luweero to have university students' bodies represented on the national executive committee. The resolution is due for further discussion and adoption during the party's delegates' conference next month.
Muntu said the party needed young people willing to canvass for votes house-to-house in the country's 6,000 parishes. Gen Muntu told The Observer that the house-to-house vote hunt was part of his six months' mobilisation and organisation exercise to claw back the time lost in reconciling factions after the election that brought him to the FDC presidency in 2012. Muntu also insisted that the party would continue to work with "other democracy-seeking forces."
Although Muntu insists the party primaries will be held next year, Besigye argues that there is no need to participate in the next election because that would not "take the dictator away."
Kyambogo University Guild President Victor Irumba criticised youths for embracing Museveni's populist way of doing things. Pointing to the president's recent promise to pay about Shs 2.4bn in tuition fees for Makerere University students, Irumba accused the students of making Museveni look like "a Messiah".
New book
The Jobless Brotherhood – famous for sneaking yellow pigs into the Parliamentary premises– used the occasion to announce the launch of a new book. Written by Norman Tumuhimbise, a Brotherhood member, the book will be launched on November 11 at the Contstitution square. Tumuhimbise told The Observer that the foreword of Unsowing The Mustard Seed has been written by Col Samson Mande.
