{UAH} State House Entebbe was the Governor's Lodge built by Sir Hesketh Bell.

1.Sir Harry Johnston who likened the imitativeness of the Baganda to that of the Japanese.

2.Those were the times! A British newspaper cutting in May 1918 announcing the ennoblement of Kabaka Daudi Chwa by King George. Notice how Chwa is called 'His Royal Highness' instead of 'His Majesty'!

When explorers and missionaries first arrived in Buganda they noted the natural ability and receptiveness of the people to European ideas, and contrasted these attributes with the listlessness, conservatism and suspicion which they had encountered among tribes on the Nile and Tanganyika routes. They recorded often: "Buganda is Africa's Might"

3.The University of Cambridge, where both Governor Cohen and Kabaka Muteesa 11 had their education.Sir Andrew Cohen was appointed Governor of Uganda in 1952, then charged by the Colonial Office to follow the directive given in 1947, by the then Colonial Secretary Creech Jones, for colonial governments to develop an efficient and democratic system of local government, with the task of preparing the country for independence, a directive to challenge the abilities of even the most experienced colonial servants.Andrew Cohen had Buganda close to his heart, especially as he had been a friend of Muteesa in their Cambridge days, even inviting him to his home on many occasions for talks on Africa. Now as Governor of Uganda, with its other kingdoms, there was only one choice left to him and that was first to reorganize the Legislative Council to include Africans selected throughout Uganda, thus creating the basis for a representative parliament, and at the same time give Africans far more say in the running of the country and certainly he was not going to have the Europeans and Asians who were against independence stop him.

We saw how he took away a number of cotton ginneries from the Asians and handed them over to some well-qualified Ugandans to run.

4.Sir William Gower (2nd from left):Sir William Gowers, Governor from 1925 to 1932. He did much to reform the administration and would have been glad to have had his activities less hampered by the 1900 Uganda Agreement. His reforms led to a new relationship between administrators and a new generation of chiefs from which emerged a pattern of states under British guidance, of which Buganda was only one although the most important. However, we know him as the Governor who had, within months, furious rows and disagreements with Sir Apollo Kaggwa and others about the attempt to stop the over boozing on Waragi (locally brewed gin) in the Kibuga (city) and Mengo area because of the blindness it caused.

5.State House Entebbe - the official residence of the President of Uganda which was the Governor's Lodge built by Sir Hesketh Bell. The first Governor, Sir Hesketh Bell, 1905-1909 we are told, was a great asset for Buganda: certainly he has often been recorded as saying it was the happiest time of his life and he is still remembered for introducing the marathon race of 26 miles from Entebbe to Kampala, where the first one was won by Joseph Kapere in 3:03hrs. Then he had the very first motor car brought into the country which he made sure that Kabaka Daudi Chwa was its first passenger. It was Bell who had the Entebbe Governor's Lodge (now State House) erected by the Royal Engineers and at the time set up an Agriculture Show to let London know Uganda was really on the map. It was Bell, horrified at the quarter of a million deaths from sleeping sickness between 1898 and1906, who did much to end the scourge.
