KAMPALA

Seven-year-old Richard can hardly hold his stool after he was repeatedly sodomised.

Medical reports indicate the Primary One pupil's anus valve was damaged which causes the stool to flow out uncontrollably. According to the police, Richard was allegedly sodomised by a 16-year-old student and a 23-year-old man identified as Christopher Kalungi. Both suspects are residents of Wakiso District.

They were charged yesterday with aggravated defilement in the Kasangati Magistrate's Court and remanded. They could not plead to the charges because aggravated defilement is a capital offence only tried by the High Court.

Case reported
Mr Charles K. Kusingura, the officer in charge of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate at Kasanganti Police Station, said the incident was reported by the boy's mother identified by her first name [Winnie] to protect the identity of a minor.

"The boy's mother received a phone call from the boy's grandmother who was staying with him. She in turn reported the case to us," Mr Kusingura said.
The boy, according to Mr Kusingura could not walk or sit when he arrived at the police station.

Winnie said her son was sodomised five times before his grandmother noticed the problem. The case file indicates assault took place last month in Lutete village, Wakiso District.

Suspects charged
The suspects were charged with aggravated defilement in the Magistrate's Court and are yet to be committed to the High Court for trial. Aggravated defilement is a capital offence only tried by the High Court.

"Before, my son could not sit or pass stool properly but now, the pain has reduced although he still has stomach pain," the mother of two explained. Since the incident, Ms Winnie says Richard's father has stopped supporting her and she is in precarious financial situation. She has no formal employment.

Dr Simon Lokodo, the Minister of Ethics condemned the sexual assault, which he attributed to increasing perversion and drug abuse among the young generation.
