Kenyan government has frozen about 300 million shillings ($3.3
million) in assets from 525 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) it
de-registered this week, Kenya's The Standard reported Thursday
(December 18th).

In a statement Tuesday, the government's NGO Co-ordination Board said
it had "de-registered 510 organisations for non-compliance with the
law," adding that 15 are suspected of using their charitable status as
a front for raising cash for terrorism.

Another 10,000 NGOs have been asked to submit their audited accounts
within two weeks, and face closure if they fail to do so.

Those that comply and are cleared will be allowed to keep operating,
said NGO Co-ordination Board executive director Fazul Mahamed.

"We are not against NGOs," he said. "We are just asking them to comply
with the law, which requires them to submit annual returns."

"Our requests are very straightforward and we hope they will comply," he said.
