Police discovered the body overnight in a second floor apartment of the Toronto Community Housing building at Sherbourne and Wellesley after a neighbour noticed the door was ajar.

Cliff Martin, a member of the building residents' association, said the death has been deemed suspicious and that "it wasn't a sudden death."

Shaun Fickling, who lives in the unit next to the one where the body was discovered, said police knocked on his door early in the morning — somewhere around 2 a.m., he figures.

"They asked if we knew — how well we knew the people next door," he said, adding he rarely saw his neighbours.

"You would think that they weren't even living there because I've never heard next door before. Very quiet."

Most people in the building didn't know about the death until police began knocking on doors in search of information. The building has been plagued by several high-profile incidents, including the death of a two-year-old girl earlier this year— her babysitter was arrested and chargedmonths later.

"I'm scared. I live alone with my 9-year-old," said resident Doreen Ayles.

"I don't feel safe. I don't feel safe."

The police investigation is continuing. As of this evening, police had cordoned off several dumpsters behind the building to search for clues. The homicide squad is leading the investigation.
