{UAH} Gashumba's Prediction
Mr. Frank Gashumba, who frequently talks about his pride in being both Rwandese and Ugandan, has warned Baganda that they will be the casual laborers of the future in Buganda. In a Facebook posting dated January 4, 2015, Mr. Gashumba, who was born into a family of Rwandese refugees who settled in Buddu County, said that, if Baganda do not drop their false sense of honor and pride, Buganda will continue to develop without benefit to the Baganda.
Writing in Luganda, Mr. Gashumba posted, "Abantu abaali abapakasi mu Buganda kati bali mu kintu n'olw'ensonga eyo tewali muntu asobola kupakasa mu Buganda okugyako Abaganda bennyini." ("The people who were previously the casual laborers in Buganda are now in control of everything and no one can be the future casual laborers except the Baganda themselves.")
Gashumba accused Baganda of obsessing over holding titles like Omutaka (Elder), Ow'Ekitiibwa (Honorable), Omukungu (Official) and others. He asserted that Baganda have a saying that a Muganda can never sink to the level of being a Securiko night watchman, yet many Baganda are in America, Britain, Iraq and other countries working as night watchmen.
Thousands of Rwandese families came to Buganda and other parts of Uganda in the 1950s and 1960s as refugees, to escape sectarian killings around the time Rwanda gained independence from Belgian colonialists. Many of the traumatized, mostly Tutsi Rwandese refugees, along with some Banyankole, Bakiga, Luos from Kenya and other nationalities used to come to Buganda to be employed by Baganda farmers and businessmen.
According to Gashumba's Facebook page, he attended Masaka Secondary School and Nkumba University. It lists his occupations as CEO of Mali Group of Companies, Head of National Action for Awakening Uganda and a Social Activist. On the other hand, in a July 18, 2010 interview with N. Turyahikayo, which appeared in the New Vision, Gashumba said that he was a graduate of Makerere University.
