Fort Hood, Texas, officials Wednesday released the name of a soldier found dead at his home in nearby Killeen on Tuesday, less than a week after he'd returned to the U.S. from a mission to West Africa.

Spc. Kendrick Vernell Sneed, 24, deployed with 62nd Engineer Company, 36th Engineer Brigade, to Liberia in October in support of Operation United Assistance.

Members of the unit returned to Fort Hood on Jan. 7 and entered a 21-day quarantine during which they are monitored for signs of the Ebola virus.

Sneed had received emergency leave from what the Defense Department calls "controlled monitoring" to address a family matter, a Fort Hood spokesman said Tuesday.

Sneed had been required to report twice daily to medical officials during his leave, a spokesman said. Tests have ruled out Ebola, but no other details on Sneed's death have been released.

Sneed joined the Army in 2009, according to a Fort Hood news release, and twice deployed to Afghanistan — from February 2011 to January 2012 and again from May to December 2013.

His honors include two Army Commendation Medals and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three stars, among others.

His death remains under investigation by the Killeen Police Department, the release states.
