A Ugandan woman who had been held hostage by Taliban extremists in war-torn Afghanistan has been released.

Save the Children Uganda in a statement signed by the country director, Barbara Burroughs, on Monday confirmed the release of their colleague, Sarah Mukisa, from captivity.

Mukisa was abducted when suspected Taliban fighters raided a Save the Children compound guarded by United Nations forces about two weeks ago.

The foreign affairs ministry spokesperson, Fred Opolot, also confirmed that Mukisa had been freed.

"We received the good news that she has been freed and we are excited by the development. The Government and all other stakeholders are working hard to ensure that she comes back home," Opolot stated.

Mukisa's abduction was suspected to be in retaliation for two female Taliban terrorists who had been arrested by the coalition forces.

The Government got to know about Mukisa's abduction about two weeks ago, but chose to keep the news under wraps for fear that publicity would jeopardise her life.

The Government has chosen to treat the matter delicately until Mukisa finally reaches home.

Sources said her release has been partly secured by Uganda's External Security Organisation together with Uganda's embassy in Kabul and other international security agencies.

There are about 20 Ugandans working in Afghanistan with NGOs, the UN and as private security guards.

According to a UN report titled 'Humanitarian Outcome', 155 aid workers were killed in 2013 while 171 were wounded and another 134 were kidnapped.
