Patients Stranded As Kabale Medics Strike

A total of 35 intern health workers at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale have laid down their tools citing refusal by government to pay their allowances.
The health workers included doctors, dentists, pharmacists and graduate nurses. They say they have for long complained about their allowances and that they were finding it hard to meet basic needs.
The workers claim not to have received their allowances for the last three months. The strike at the hospital left hundreds of patients stranded.
One of the interns told Chimpreports that they are entitled to a monthly Shs 600,000 pay and an additional of 220,000shillings for upkeep.
The strike left many patients unattended to. The few workers on duty were directed to the maternity ward, theater and the surgical ward.
Several Patients at the outpatient department have opted to go to private clinics.

One Alex Kaboroga who had brought his pregnant wife for check up, proceeded to the nearby clinic due to congestion. He says that attention at the maternity ward was being given to emergency cases and those who are about to deliver.
Sister Christine Akurut the Principal nursing officer at Kabale regional referral hospital confirmed the strike.
She says that the Hospital Management had tried to convince the workers to return to work without success.
Akurut acknowledged that the workers had not received their pay, but added that that was the responsibility of the Health Ministry.
