ODM's Moses Kajwang' is the new Homa Bay Senator. By 9:30pm on Thursday evening, he had garnered 116,087 votes against his closet rival Philip Okundi of Maendeleo Democratic Party's 25,780.

With votes from from 813 out of a total of 816 polling stations, it was unlikely that votes from the remaining stations in a poll in which half of the registered voters did not cast their ballots would reverse Mr Kajwang's lead.

Claims of vote rigging, bribery and voter apathy characterised the poll as ODM put up a spirited campaign to retain the seat previously occupied by former Senator Otieno Kajwang', who died last November.

A man was injured after Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang' led a group of youth in storming a hotel in Homa Bay over claims that Maendeleo Democratic Party's Okundi and Karachuonyo MP James Rege were working with IEBC officers to rig the election.

A contingent of GSU officers surrounded the hotel.

By close of voting, it was apparent that the contest had narrowed down to ODM's Kajwang' and Mr Okundi.
