Presidential advisor Kyalya regrets dealing with NRM
Ms Maureen Kyalya Waluube, the outspoken presidential advisor on poverty alleviation in Busoga, has admitted that she regrets dropping her bid for a parliamentary seat in exchange for a State House job.
Kyalya, a losing FDC Jinja Woman parliamentary candidate in 2011, claims she was hoodwinked with what turned out to be empty promises. Kyalya successfully challenged the election of NRM's Agnes Nabirye in the High court. Nabirye appealed but before the case could be disposed of, the ruling party persuaded Kyalya to withdraw her interest in the case.
Kyalya was later appointed a presidential advisor – a job she took up with immense energy and conviction. But she now claims that the trade-off was only intended to kill her political ambitions.
In an interview with The Observer, the vocal presidential aide reached out to her supporters during the parliamentary campaigns.
"I would like to apologize yet again to all who felt I had betrayed you. True, I did, and that is because I blindly believed that I would be given the promised resources to alleviate poverty in Busoga. To me, it was more beneficial serving and saving Busoga as a region than just Jinja. Anyhow, I am still your bonafide princess and will continue working with you to save Busoga till the day I die," she said.
Kyalya, who posted similar messages on her Facebook page, claims she signed an agreement with Nabirye to withdraw interest in the petition and let her continue as
Woman MP on the understanding that the current legislator would not stand against her in 2016. She claims that her political rivals forged a consent judgment against her.
"As a result of those forgeries, the Electoral Commission refused to pay my lawyer who has sued me personally for the costs. My point is I gave them my place and they still made sure they put my personal life and property at risk," she added.
Kyalya said she could no longer work with the NRM.
"I will be lying to my supporters and believers, if I say I can again trust anyone in the ruling party to have my support for any political seat," she said.
Neither does she see herself running against Nabirye in 2016. Instead, she has now offered to support DP's former candidate and second runner- up Josephine Nambooze to file an execution order for the Jinja Woman MP seat and asked all her supporters, family and friends to back Nambooze.
"I have already established the Busoga Development Cooperative Union as a means of alleviating poverty and I need Ms Nambooze on board to support me. Please help me, if not for my sake, then for my father's sake Lt Stephen Kyalya Kanobe who introduced DP to Busoga, please help me by supporting DP's Nambooze," she said.
Nambooze welcomed Kyalya's support, but she told The Observer that the matter would be handled by DP and not by her as an individual.
