Top 10 highlights of Gauteng Sopa

Gauteng Premier David Makhura today delivered the state of the province address, setting the tone for the province's programme of action. Below are the 10 points worth noting:

1. More than R10 billion in public and private investments is to go towards the rejuvenation of the Joburg CBD

2. The old townships of Klipspruit and Alexandra are to be revitalised

3. 140 000 housing units will be built in Lion Park, Diepsloot East, Fleurhof, Cosmo City, Malibongwe Ridge and Goud Rand

4. R71 billion will go towards the construction of Waterfall City, the largest city to be build in post-apartheid South Africa. The project is expected to create 100 000 jobs.

5. The Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system will be expanded to other areas at a cost of R2 billion.

6. Lanseria Airport is to receive a R500-million facelift, funded by the private sector.

7. The Africa Gateway to be constructed in the heart of Centurion will comprise a convention centre, a hotel, commercial office space. The new United Nations offices will be based there.

8. The City of Tshwane is to invest R525 million in a business process outsourcing park in Hammanskraal to offer training and technical support to small businesses

9. Some government vehicles will be repaired by township-based enterprises at selected repair hubs

10. Rooftop solar panels will be installed on all government buildings. With 8 million square metres of rooftop space available, it's estimated this will generate 300 to 500 megawatts of power.
