{UAH} “Vote for a person who can serve you” President tells Bugweri people

President Yoweri Museveni has called on the people of Bugweri County,
in Iganga District to vote for a person who can serve them during the
next general elections.

The President, who is the National Chairman of the National Resistance
Movement (NRM) made the call yesterday in Idudi Town, Iganga District
where he addressed a rally. He welcomed 910 converts from the
opposition to the Movement.

"I welcome the converts back to the Movement. The Movement members
should welcome them and fully cooperate while working with them. I
congratulate Mzee Kirunda Kivejinja for having enabled them to return.
The NRM always looks for people to increase the number of its
members," he said.

Mr. Museveni made the remarks shortly after the Senior Presidential
Advisor Kirunda Kivejinja had introduced the converts to him.

President Museveni strongly urged the people of Iganga to stop voting
for candidates who undermine Government development programs. He
observed that since they voted for Abdul Katuntu they have not
benefited as much as they could if they had voted for a committed NRM
Member of Parliament.

The President called on the youth and children in particular to
concentrate in their studies as a prerequisite for their success in
life. He also urged them to fear God, read the Bible or the Koran as
well as be committed to their faiths.

He further asked them to take care of their health and completely
avoid promiscuity, obey their parents and to always participate in
sports and exercises in order to be strong and remain healthy.

Mr. Museveni directed the Ministry of Health to ensure that Idudi Town
gets a Health facility and pledged to provide the residents of Idudi
with piped water.

The President reminded wanainchi to engage in modern commercial and
calculated agriculture as opposed to the traditional practice of
subsistence farming. He advised families with small landholdings to
stop rearing indigenous cattle and instead keep exotic dairy cows that
will enable them generate good income from milk production. He said
indigenous cows should only be reared by farmers owning large pieces
of land.

He reminded them to stop the bad practice of land fragmentation which
has been witnessed upon the death of the head of the family. He urged
them to ensure that they only share what accrues from the land.

The Senior Presidential Advisor and CEC Member Kirunda Kivejinja
assured the President Museveni that Bugweri County fully supports NRM
Government. He introduced over 900 members from the opposition who
converted to the Movement whom he said were earlier misled by the
opposition leaders in the area.

President Museveni on arrival toured a fish pond run by the Musubo
Fish Pond Group in Bugweri County, Iganga District. He was conducted
around the ponds by the group leader, Mr. Yazidi Waiswa and was very
impressed with the work done.

The President pledged a donation of a fish hatchery to boost the
activities of the members.

He also toured a mango plantation owned by Mr. Moses Wanume and was
equally impressed with the work done on the farm.

Mr. Wanume conducted the President around the site prepared for a
fruit juice factory.
President Museveni pledged to supply electricity to the area to enable
the factory have smooth operations and also serve the community in the
neighborhood.

Mr. Museveni addressed a gathering of Minani Integrated Farmers
Association and called on them to practice modern calculated
commercial agriculture. He observed that they have got fertile soil
and urged them to use it profitably by discarding subsistence farming.
President Museveni addressed another meeting of Bugweri Clan Supreme
Council and told them that Uganda had a lot of problems from the
colonial days. He said the country was divided amidst political
conflicts especially between 1962 and 1966.

President Museveni called on the elders to avoid discrimination along
tribal or religious grounds or despise anyone observing that Uganda
has had a lot of problems and the NRM Government has done its best to
solve them. He said the Government has among other things managed to
build a strong national army.

The President pointed out that the Government has also attracted
investors to boost the country's economy expanding the tax base. He
was pleased to note that the expanded tax base has enabled the
Government to render a lot of services like the improvement of the
infrastructure. He said the remaining challenge was to increase
household income.
President Museveni called on wanainchi to wake up and engage in the
economic activities that will ensure both food and financial security
in their homes. He said since families in the area have an average
land holding of 2.5 acres they should utilize 0.5 acres for food
production and cultivate fruits and coffee on the remaining two acres
of land.

The President, who encouraged the people of Iganga to also engage in
fish farming without interfering with swamps, informed them that army
officers will over-see the promotion of agriculture by providing them
with free seedlings.

The Senior Presidential Advisor, Mr.Kirunda Kivejinja was pleased to
note that the youth who were previously involved in gambling are now
fully involved in agriculture production.
