LUUKA.

Luuka District leaders have begun lobbying the private sector to raise Shs1.2b to fix the district's roads, most of which are in a sorry state.

Luuka District Chairman Samuel Kakyada said the district has designed simple budgets for presentation to well-wishers, adding that the move was precipitated by government's failure to release more than Shs1b that they had earlier requested to fix the roads.

Speaking while receiving a cash donation of Shs3m from Kaliro Sugar Factory last week, Mr Kakyada said government has been disappointing them every financial year since 2010 when the district was carved out of Iganga.

The issue at hand
"There are many swamps that government promised to work to improve on the roads but it has failed and we cannot work on them as a district because our local revenue is nothing to write home about.

"We, therefore, decided to go lobbying to fund their (roads) rehabilitation," he said.

He named the most affected roads as Budhabangula Naigobya Bukova road, Bukyamata-Busete road which links Luuka to Kamuli district, Budhuba to Kinu road, Buwologoma Ndoya which links Bulongo to Bukanga Sub-county Sub-county and Butimbwa Swamp area on the road linking Luuka to Iganga district.

Kaliro Sugar Factory Field Manager Ronald Baraza, who handed over the company's contribution meant for work on the Budhabangula-Baigobya Bukova road, said the money should be used to hire a grader, purchase culverts and murram and pay labourers.
