The vice president of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in eastern region, Ms Salaamu Musumba, has backed the move by some voters in Kamuli to have the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, unopposed for the district woman MP seat next year.

Speaking during the Bugabula South Youth Sports gala last Sunday, Ms Musumba said Busoga sub-region should rally behind Ms Kadaga, describing her as the "gem of the region". Ms Kadaga was the chief guest at the function.

Ms Musumba, who is also the district LC5 chairperson, described as wild, the allegations that she intends to contest against Ms Kadaga for the seat.

Ms Kadaga recently warned Ms Musumba against antagonising public servants in Kamuli, saying they were instrumental in propelling her to office during the 2012 by-election in which she beat NRM candidate Thomas Kategere.

"I know you are my very good friend and sister, but there is something I want you to think about tonight. FDC could not even make 10,000 votes. The support that propelled you to where you are now was from NRM, I don't want you to forget that," Ms Kadaga said while in Buyende District last month.

Following the public outburst, there was speculation that Ms Musumba would either contest against Ms Kadaga or back any candidate against her. "I am not intending to front a person," Ms Musumba said.

Iganga Woman MP Olivia Kwagala Kabaale lauded Ms Musumba for clearing the air, saying it had come as a big relief to the leadership of the sub-region.
