The Ugandan government has halted the proposed exportation of health professionals to Trinidad and Tobago, saying the move would weaken the health care system in the country.
Uganda's Health Minister Ellioda Tumwesigye said Wednesday in Kampala that government reached the decision after discovering that 75 percent of the health professionals who applied to relocate to Trinidad and Tobago were specialists already serving in government health facilities.
The plan by the government to export more than 260 specialists to Trinidad and Tobago through the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs prompting protests from parliament and health rights activists.
The number of health professionals target for export include 15 internal medicine specialists, four psychiatrists, 20 radiologists, 15 pediatricians, four ear, nose and throat specialists, 100 registered midwives, four anesthetists, four ophthalmologists, 40 public health nurses and100 midwives, amongst others.
A number of civil society organisations and activists have in the past protested the move to the export health workers right from its inception saying it will create a huge gap in the Ugandan health system.
