PRETORIA - President Jacob Zuma says talking can solve xenophobia.
He met with business, trade union and religious leaders to discuss the country's migration policies, and the recent attacks on foreigners around the country.
The organisations included Business Unity South Africa, taxi association Santaco, the SA Youth Council and the Interfaith Council -- he urged all to work together to root out violence, adding that it not only government that should deal with the issue.
Zuma says no grievance against a foreigner could ever justify cold-blooded murder, the destruction of property and displacement of people.
He emphasized the importance of open discussion.
"We are confident that today as we met with the sectors, we have taken one important decision that the talks must not just be talks but one which must be implemented."
"We have agreed to establish a small team that is going to put together that proposals and suggestions that will be implemented by all of us," Zuma said.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) has held a debate on the issue, in Cape Town.
It said government needs to be proactive in dealing with xenophobia, and develop a strategy to address its root causes.
The IJR says the lack of proper integration of foreigners into communities is a huge concern.
