{UAH} Mbabazi Youths Officially Invite Obama To Uganda
Following the announcement of Barrack Obama’s 8 hour visit to Kenya in July this year, youths under the pressure group Poor NRM Youth have written to the US embassy requesting for a meeting with the US President.
In a letter addressed to the US Ambassador in Uganda, Mr. Scott Delshi, the youths led by their National Coordinator Richard Kirekyankuba explained that Obama’s trip to Kenya for the 2015 Global Entrepreneurs Summit has come at the ideal time and highlighted the need for the US President to consider meeting them.
“We cordially wish to extend our invitation to President Obama to come to Uganda after winding up his Kenya visit whose proximity is very close to that of Uganda to enable us pour out our grievance to him,” reads part of the letter to the US Embassy.
In an interview with Chimpreports, Kirekyankuba explained that the main issues for Obama’s visit to Kenya are the same challenges Uganda is facing which according to him necessitates that he comes to Uganda.
“Since 1986, corruption has been the order of the day in Uganda by mainly government officials with the presumed economic expansion of the country only in the pockets of the few connected individuals thus creating the gap between the rich and poor.”
According to the NRM Poor Youth members, unlike Kenya where the middle class has tremendously emerged on an unprecedented scale of 5.7% Real Gross Domestic Product growth, the vice versa is true for Uganda which is only declining.
Democracy
The youths in their letter requested that Obama makes a stopover in Uganda so that they can lead him through the woes of absence of democracy that they say has undermined the country’s development.
“Elections have been periodically held but marred with irregularities including vote rigging and ballot stuffing, heavy deployment of armed security agencies around ballot boxes thus intimidating voters. There is need for such issues to be discussed with President Obama during his visit in July.”
The youth further blame President Museveni for the wrangles in the ruling NRM party which they say led to the overthrow of Amama Mbabazi as the Secretary General before being replaced by Justine Kasule Lumumba.
“President Museveni presenting himself as the sole candidate for the NRM party is against the will of many of us as party members and such a gesture shows lack of respect for democracy which needs to be discussed with president Obama,” said Kirekyankuba.
The Pro-Mbabazi youth further blame government for what they termed as insecurity in the country, citing the recent murder of Senior State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi by unknown assailants which they say needs to be addressed when the US President meets them.
“There have been rampant deaths throughout the country leaving us to survive largely by God’s mercy and protection. We have to let him (Obama) know what the country is going through so as to get solutions.”
The NRM Poor Youth coordinator however revealed that they are awaiting a reply from the White House through Mr. Delshi about their request but noted that if not granted, they would present their issues to Obama while in Kenya.
“In the event that Obama fails to meet us in Uganda, we are determined to go to Kenya and present our petition to him,” Kirekyankuba noted.
