Panic as 37 Police Officers Escape with Guns 0
The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has instructed the arrest of at least 37 police officers who have deserted official duty in recent months.
The most affected unit is the Field Force which comprises officers trained recently at Kabalye Police Training School.
The head of the training school, Moses Kafeero, was recently transferred under mysterious circumstances.
It is widely held some of the graduates from Kabalye were poorly baked, leading to frustrations during their service.
A source told this investigative website that several officers did not hand in their guns, posing a national security threat.
Deputy Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye said on Monday that, "Desertion from duty is a crime that may impact negatively on human resource management and development especially since those officers are trained and equipped with official materials such as uniforms and ammunition."
Below is Namaye's statement in full:
The Uganda Police Force has compiled a fresh list of officers who are suspected to have deserted their different official assignments with no intention of returning.
An officer is said to have deserted when he or she is absent from duty without authority for a continuous period of twenty one days (21) or more.
