FW: {UAH} Nine million Ugandans go hungry every year - report-kateregga pls pass this to NRM chairman

"However, the (FAO) report indicates that Eastern Africa has the biggest hunger problem, with 124 million people undernourished. Tanzania has 16.8m hungry people, Kenya 9.9m and Rwanda 3 million. (EMMANUEL AINEBYOONA)."

Oooh, dear Ugandans we thought Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Burundi were alone to have some people suffering from hunger; and we are now very saddened that even  in Rwanda with its economic miracles FAO is reporting a quarter of total population undernourished!

Kampala.
Despite the global decline in the number of people going hungry, about nine million Ugandans remain undernourished, according to a new report released yesterday.
Results contained in "The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2015," report indicate that Uganda's portion of undernourished population currently stands at 25.5 per cent, a decline from 34 per cent stated in the Uganda Health Demographic Survey 2011.

However, Uganda's prevalence of undernourishment remains high and has not achieved the Millennium Development Goal, which calls for total elimination of hunger by end of this year.
The estimates indicate that about 795 million people in the world were undernourished in 2014.
"The share of the undernourished population has decreased from 18.6 per cent in 1990-90 to 10.9 per cent in 2014-16, reflecting fewer undernourished people," the report reads in part.
It adds: "Since 1990-90, the number of undernourished people has declined by 216 million globally…"
Seventy two countries out of 129 countries monitored by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have achieved the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the prevalence of undernourishment by 2015.
FAO Director General José Graziano da Silvar said: "The near-achievement of the MDG hunger targets shows us that we can indeed eliminate the scourge of hunger in our lifetime."
In the developing regions, the prevalence of undernourishment declined to 12.9 percent of the population, down from 23.3 percent, a quarter of a century ago.
However, the report indicates that Eastern Africa has the biggest hunger problem, with 124 million people undernourished. Tanzania has 16.8m hungry people, Kenya 9.9m and Rwanda 3 million.
FAO Uganda representative Alhaji Momodou Jallow said Uganda is food secure but access is still a challenge in terms of food movement from one place to another.
