{UAH} COMMON SENSE DON'T COME CHEAP!

We are have gone as far as calling for federalism for this very reason. It is not only the shortage of medicine due to distance but democracy, involvement, the whole whack of governance and distribution which is lacking the farther you move away from Kampala.

DR Charles Olaro, the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital director has called on government to establish regional medical stores to curb drug shortage supplies.

His call comes after delayed supply of x-ray films and spinal needles among other items which has lasted for six months causing an outcry among the public.

"For the last six months we have never received supplies from National Medical Stores, we have talked to them that lets have regional medical stores so as to solve this problem of delayed supply," Olaro said.

He challenged political leaders to support, his call to have regional medical stores.

"If we had regional stores I would just drive there and pick the drugs but if they are very far I have to wait until delivery is made," Olaro said.

He revealed that some supplies cannot wait and therefore the hospital has to devise means to continue serving the people.

"The whole of yesterday I was at NMS and they said the earliest they can supply drugs to this hospital is next week. But we cannot wait with things like x-ray films, oxygen, and spinal needles. We sometimes buy these things and sell them to people at a very low price," Olaro said.

Recently a team of leaders from Kabarole district led by the district LCV chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga visited the hospital over the same issue.

"We have received several complaints about illegal charges on x-ray services which are supposed to be free. People are made to pay a minimum of sh10,000 which to us is cheating; we call it unacceptable and should stop," he said.

Rwbuhinga cautioned the hospital administration to stop the alleged selling of x-ray services at the hospital.

Several other services especially in the surgical department are charged a fee which district leaders contested.

Stephen Kagwera the Burahya County MP called locals to always report the misconduct by the health workers at the hospital.

"When they charge you money, do not keep quiet. Always report to leaders so that we find solutions," Kagwera said

Julius Isimbwa from Fort Portal Town also asked government to decentralize drug stores distribution.

"I hope it is a very good idea and hope government puts it into consideration," Isimbwa said.
