IGANGA- Police in Iganga District have barred officials of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party from accessing Iganga Hospital premises where they had been scheduled to distribute foodstuffs and other items such as soap and sugar to patients.
FDC officials led by the district party Women's League chairperson, Hajjat Zurah Nabirye, had last Friday gone to the hospital to distribute the items to patients during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
However, the vehicle in which the items were being carried was denied entry to the government facility.
A brief scuffle ensued at the entrance as the FDC members tried to force their way in but they were overpowered by police.
The district police commander Vincent Mwesigye, who deployed at the hospital gate, told journalists that neither the police nor the hospital administration had sanctioned the visit, a claim the FDC officials dismissed.
"We wrote to the medical superintendent on [July] 7 and even copied the letter to the district police commander. The hospital gave us a go ahead, but we were surprised to find officers at the entrance," said Hajjat Nabirye.
A copy of a letter seen by Daily Monitor indicates that the medical superintendent, Dr James Waako, had allowed the officials to deliver the items, but Mr Mwesigye said the permission had not been granted by the right authorities.
"We were called by the administration to stop them because they had not got permission from the district health officer," Mr Mwesigye told journalists.
The hospital administrator, Mr Idi Bateganya, backed Mr Mwesigye's claims, saying the FDC officials had misinterpreted Dr Waako's letter.
He said the letter had advised them to seek clearance from "the relevant authorities".
The district FDC chairperson, Mr Sulaiman Magumba, told journalists the party would find other means of distributing the items to the patients and their caretakers.
