Opposition coalition condemns Besigye, Mbabazi arrests

The arrest of former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Kizza Besigye and former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi are a sign of panic by President Yoweri Museveni, the Democratic Alliance (TDA) a coalition of opposition parties in Uganda has said.

Addressing the media at a joint press conference in Ntinda today, TDA contends that the arrests are proof that Museveni is using security organs to block any opposition against his aspirations to stay in power.

This morning, Mbabazi was arrested in Njeru town as he headed to Mbale to hold his first consultative meeting since he announced his bid for the presidency in June.

Besigye, on the other hand, was arrested from his home, as he headed to Kasangati town to launch his presidential bid and is being held at Nagalama Police while Amama Mbabazi is at Kira road Police.

Former Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya condemned the Museveni for using the police and other security agencies to suppress dissenting voices within what he claims is a democratic state.

"You hear the president saying all those in opposition are 'nothing' and can't even compete against him. Why is he scared of us who are 'nothing' to go out and express ourselves to the people and the people decide who wins who doesn't.

He must know that we are not going to allow dictatorship. He must know that the people are tired of a long-stay leader who used to tell others that you have stayed for a long time, when they haven't even stayed for ten years"

Bukenya, once a strong critic of Mbabazi after his fall out with the ruling NRM party, notes that though he still does not like him, his rights to associate should not be curtailed.

Asuman Basalirwa, the Justice Forum president, says the police has blatantly violated the Public Order Management Act by deliberately blocking the opposition from conducting rallies to meet their supporters.

"Bad as it is, it should be respected but what we are seeing is that the Public Order Management Act is being abused. Adding "even a bad law should be respected."

Interesting that the two are historical NRM who used to be African Democratic Movement die-hards that resisted Obote's Pan Africanism of the tyranny type.

Ssengavudde mu Ngazzemu.

They look like fugitives. Dont they? Besigye looks like he is queueing for kabuyonjo and Sseju looks at the Heavens for an inspiration or Devine intervention hahaha.Birds of a feather.

Thats what happens when you betray a National cause.

Oh Uganda!!! - a truly banana republic, governed by a tin-pot dictator, who not only has lost his way, but has no clue about what it takes to move this country into the 21st century.

Deep down Museveni must know that his time is up. No man/woman can stop history.

Museveni and his method belong to the past. Museveni and his ilk are NOT the face of Uganda of tomorrow.

Dear all, (1) Whereas I agree that it is JAM's RIGHT to consult country-wide, nevertheless, I do not appreciate his tactics of transfering most of the risks involved in that onto easterners and northerners, as per his scheduling of those consultations.

(2) I also say that M7's use of the police to arrest those perceived as potential threats to his presidential power is WRONG, UNFAIR, COWARDLY & possibly ILLEGAL too.

(3) I contend that, whereas the arrest of JAM and others may have saved M7's ego temporarily, it might have boosted the popularity of his victims a bit. That is not important.

(4) the arrest of JAM before he reached Mbale may have saved what I feared most - bloodsheding of the Bagisu lives today.

Please do not read me as complementing M7 fot that. What I mean is that the saving of life today was just a bi-product of his real intentions.

This type of arrest is common in one-party tyrannies.

It's surprising that it happened in Uganda, ostensibly a democracy !

Well, well the world over is watching M7 and his security forces.

However, M7 has not done himself any justice. The world over is seeing through his weaknesses and undemocratic nature and injustices.

Message to M7 and his security forces, when one fears competition it means they know whatever there are doing is not right hence displaying vulnerability by using force and any means to hang on to power.

This is exposing to the world that Uganda is in a very fragile state right now. There's now already a state of anarchy.

However, on the positive side you are giving opposition and JPAM good publicity. So please keep on arresting them and M7 government will continue loosing popularity.

Soon foreign investors will start packing to leave. Economy is crumbling now as evidenced by the high rate of Dollar and British Pound sterling. Let the show continue!

@Dida-- You just took my word from the mouth! Those thugs are out of the horizion from all Ugandans.

Ugandans know the difference, Ugandans remember days of insecurity, indiscriminate killings, raping, lack of money, food, no education, begging in the streets and quite often running with their families to protect their lives.

Thank Havens for Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, that noble man who was sent from the above to save his homeland- Uganda.Thank you Mzzei!!!

I must admit, I really admire Kizza Bsweigye for his tenacity and spirit to keep on figting even after many humiliations and suffering to which he has been subjected to time and time again
