Rakai. The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, has scoffed at former prime minister Amama Mbabazi, saying he is dishonest and cannot be trusted with state power.
Gen Otafiire said for the time he has worked with Mr Mbabazi, he has known him as dishonest, urging voters not to associate with him.
"You should probably consider him (Mbabazi) when we have all died," he said while addressing residents in Kyotera County during a fundraising ceremony for Nakatoogo Primary School in Rakai District on Sunday.
The minister, who was invited by Kyotera County MP Haruna Kasolo, contributed Shs1.4 million towards the construction of new structures at the school.
Gen Otafiire alleged that the persistent disputes, which have marred previous NRM primaries and the 2011 general election, were Mr Mbabazi's own creation to satisfy his egocentric interests at the expense of the party.
The Ruhindi County MP also said the former prime minister lacks the necessary political clout to unseat President Museveni, urging the electorate to shun any plans intended to promote his presidential ambitions.
"You are aware we delivered this country from failed regimes that saw us go through political turmoil. The time we have now is to develop our community, not power struggles," Gen Otafiire said.
However, Mr Mbabazi's spokesperson, Mr Benjamin Alipanga, said Gen Otafiire has a personal vendetta against Mr Mbabazi, urging the public to treat his utterances with contempt.
He said Mr Mbabazi has a clean record of administration in different ministerial portfolios.
"Such accusations were labelled against him (Mbabazi) but were disapproved by competent courts of law. Why then should they continue capitalising on that? I am not surprised that such statements are coming from people like Gen Otafiire. It seems he has individual issues with Mr Mbabazi," Mr Alipanga said.
The minister contributed Shs1.4 million towards the construction of new structures at the school.
