KAMPALA- Mr Ryan Gustafson alias Jack Ferrel, an American engineer who is accused of forging US dollar currency notes totalling 180,400 has failed to secure bail at Buganda Road Magistrates Court in Kampala.
Mr Gustafson had asked for bail on grounds of ill health.
In a session before the Chief Magistrate Ms Lillian Bucyana, the accused informed court that his health is deteriorating and needs urgent medical attention.
"Your worship, I have been hospitalised in Mulago National Referral Hospital for days, suffering from a chronic infection in my chest and right leg," Mr Gustafson said.
He said efforts to secure proof for his ailments from prison authorities have proved futile because, they (administrators) do not care about his plans to acquire bail.
Mr Gustafson had presented his wife Gabriel, his mother-in- law Ms Madinah Namutebi and some of his male friends who are members of the Kampala Pentecostal Church to prove that he would never jump bail.
He was jointly charged with Mr Christopher Kojjo on nine counts of being in possession of forged currency notes, unlawful possession of ammunition, conspiracy to commit offences, among others.
In response to the accused's pleas, Ms Bucyana ordered him to produce in court a Ganda traditional marriage certificate and L CI letters that shows he is a resident of Kireka village, Wakiso district.
Magistrate Bucyana as well ordered Mr Gustafson to convince prisons authorities to give him his medical forms before causing court to grant his bail request.
Currently, Mr Gustafson's case is in its advance stages with the prosecution yet to produce the investigating officer as their last witness.
Mr Gustafson is also separately charged with another count of illegal entry into Uganda.
Prosecution states that on December 11, 2014, Mr Gustafson and Mr Kojo in Kampala and Namugongo had a total of 180,400 fake currency notes of $20, $50 and $100 denominations.
Prosecution also contends that the duo in December at Mbalwa village in Wakiso District was found selling the forged dollar currency notes.
Court adjourned the matter to August 21.
