Another min's son wants to join parliament
Written by Sadab Kitatta KaayaTaban Idi Amin, a son to former president Idi Amin (RIP), is among the more than 2,200 NRM aspirants who picked nomination forms to contest for parliament.
Taban, Amin's eldest son, wants to replace Sam Otada (Independent) as MP for Kibanda in Kiryandongo district. Since his return from exile in 2004, Taban has tried to lead a very public life.
In 2013 for instance, he tried to contest for the presidency of the country's football governing body, Fufa, but was found to lack basic requirements. Until recently, he was the deputy director of the Internal Security Organization (ISO).
The full list shows that at least three former ministers are trying to make a comeback: Dr James Nsaba Buturo (Ethics and Integrity), Sam Bitangaro (Gender and Culture) and Alex Kamugisha (Health).
In other contests, outgoing EALA representative Nusura Tiperu and Evelyn Anite, the state minister for youth and children affairs, will try to wrestle the Koboko Woman seat from Margaret Babadiri.
At the same time, Tiperu wants to replace Jacqueline Mbabazi as chairperson of the NRM Women's League. Party chairman Yoweri Museveni will yet again not face any challenge, while vice chairman Moses Kigongo will battle little-known Hakeem Asiimwe Lukenge.
Among the top party positions, party members are likely to witness a stiff fight for the positions of the regional chairpersons for Western and Northern regions.
First son-in-law Odrek Rwabogo, justice and constitutional affairs minister Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, and Uganda's ambassador to Burundi, Brig Matayo Kyaligonza, are the lead contenders for the seat.
The Northern region slot has attracted third deputy prime Minister, Gen Moses Ali, state minister for Housing, Sam Engola, deputy speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah and disaster preparedness minister Hilary Onek.
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
