{UAH} Burundi General Adolphe Nshimirimana Killed
Gen Adolphe Nshimirimana
Burundi's famous and untouchable powerful General, Adolphe Nshimirimana has been killed in an attack, reports say.
Sources say the former intelligence chief's convoy came under a rocket attack in Kamenge on Sunday morning from suspected insurgents.
According to highly placed sources the deceased was leaving his home when his car was hit with an Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG).
Government is yet to issue a statement in regard to the latest incident. The attack sparked off heavy gunfire in the north of Bujumbura until the wee hours of Sunday.
However, observers say if confirmed, Nsimirimana's death could trigger revenge killings by security forces against opposition members.
Gen Nshimirimana, who has been attached to the presidency, is one of Pierre Nkurunziza's top lieutenants accused of perpetrating a reign of terror in the country.
The General was also named in the killing of three Italian nuns – Lucia Pulici, 75, Bernadetta Boggian, 79 and Olga Raschietti, 83.
The trio was murdered at a convent in Kamenge, north of the capital Bujumbura in September 2014.
Journalist Bob Rugurika found himself behind bars after reporting on radio that that the man who confessed to killing was ordered by three men he met at a bar belonging Gen Nshimirimana.
Human Rights Watch reported that since 2005, National Intelligence Service under Nshimirimana committed torture and are strongly incriminated in having carried out extrajudicial executions, crimes for which those responsible have so far escaped punishment.
He was seen as the brains behind the crackdown on the anti-Nkurunziza protests this year.
The General also participated in the crushing of a coup against Nkurunziza, arresting several high ranking army officers.
