Kampala- Uganda's 1995 Constitution has elevated the status of women to a level that they must prepare themselves for leadership of this country, US judge Michele William Tiffany has said.
"I commend Uganda's progress in gender equality; there has been progress of women in leadership positions," said Justice Tiffany.
She added: "Ugandan women are now ripe for the top leadership of this country. I do see a woman president in the next 10 years."
She was speaking at a dinner in honour of her visit, organised by New Faces New Voices in Kampala on Tuesday.
Tiffany said she is in Uganda to kick- start a campaign to empower vulnerable women and girls to be independent and compete with men at all levels.
She was invited to the country to mobilise the elite women to join The Esther Project, her charity organisation, as good will ambassadors
The ambassadors are expected to undergo a six- month training to become trainers of trainers targeting vulnerable women and children.
The dinner was attended by lady judges and women activists.
"I am beginning with a team of women activists who have attended tonight's dinner who have registered as good will ambassadors, Tiffany noted.
New Faces New Voices Uganda chairperson Justice Julia Sebutinde hailed Tiffany for supporting the vulnerable women and girls through The Esther Project.
Ahead of the 2016 elections, an opinion poll conducted by Research World International , recently indicated that more than 2000 respondents said they were not ready for a woman president.
In the same poll, the majority of respondents (13 per cent) said they would vote for Ms Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament, when asked who they would vote for in the event that President Museveni or Dr Kizza Besigye, the former FDC leader, do not contest in the 2016 election.
Dr Patrick Wakida of Research World International observed that since the country adopted multiparty politics in 2005, only two women have offered themselves for the job; Uganda Peoples Congress' Miria Obote in 2006 and Ms Beti Olive Kamya of the Uganda Federal Alliance in 2011.

very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
