{UAH} Locals walk out on Museveni at rally

By ABUBAKER KIRUNDA

KALIRO- President Museveni sparked a walk-out from his rally in Kaliro District on Wednesday after he told off residents of Bulamogi County for trying to drag the government into the rivalry between Kyabazinga William Nadiope IV and Prince Edward Columbus Wambuzi over the Busoga Kingdom crown.

The LC5 chairperson, Mr Wycliffe Ibanda, had called for Mr Museveni's intervention to install Wambuzi as the Kyabazinga of Busoga. Mr Ibanda said people of Bulamogi cannot pay allegiance to Kyabazinga Nadiope IV.

He was speaking at a fundraising for St Luke's Church in Kaliro Town. The church needs Shs1.2b for reconstruction. Mr Museveni contributed Shs60m.

Ibanda asked President Museveni to personally ensure Prince Wambuzi is recognised as the Kyabazinga (king).

Mr Wambuzi was controversially elected Kyabazinga in October 2008, but failed to get enthroned creating a vacuum in the kingdom. The vacuum was filled last year when Prince Nadiope Gabula IV was elected unopposed on August 23 and endorsed by Busoga Lukiiko (parliament) on August 25. He was enthroned on September 13 the same year.

"… We ask you to help us have him (Prince Wambuzi) recognised as the true Kyabazinga of Busoga," said Mr Ibanda.

In a stern response, Mr Museveni said the Constitution bars government from meddling in affairs of cultural institutions.

"No one can force me to make a statement on the Kyabazingaship. I can only do this through the advice of the Attorney General," he added. He advised the people of Bulamogi to go to court if they were aggrieved.

His statement sparked a walk-away by sections of the crowd as they murmured: "He is telling us lies. We want Columbus as the Kyabazinga."
