{UAH} Soroti priest stabs self over lover

Soroti Catholic Diocesan Priest, Rev Fr Deogratius Opio was on Thursday rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in a critical condition after he allegedly attempted to kill himself over a girlfriend.

Opio reportedly stabbed himself using a knife sustaining wounds on his chest and hands in an attempted at private house outside diocese premises.

However, by the time our reporter visited the male surgical ward in Soroti Regional Referral hospital, Opio was seated on his hospital bed with plasters on both hands and a cannula for transfusion on one his hands.

Opio declined to be recorded for an interview but he said he was feeling severe pain on his chest. He did not disclose what had happened to him but referring to what had happened as "those problems".

Thomas Odongo, the twin brother to the priest said he was yet to be told what had happened to the priest and that he was waiting to hear from the doctors after the X-Ray report.

Juma Hassan Nyene, the Police spokesperson East Kyoga, confirmed that a case of attempted suicide against the priest had been reported at Soroti police station.

"We have received a report of a one Catholic priest called Opio Deogratius, 38 years old and is suspected of attempting to commit suicide. Opio has a girlfriend and a child. Last night she [the girlfriend] received a phone call from somebody and he suspected that could be a 'man-friend' so he threatened that he is going to either commit suicide or kill [her]. After a brief scuffle, he picked a knife and dangerously injured himself, stabbing himself in the chest. The woman reported the matter to police"

Nyene declined to reveal the priest's girlfriend saying she was not a suspect and there was no need of publishing her name.

"There is a matter that has already been reported to police, when he gets better, we will definitely charge him with attempted suicide. We have since also been informed that he is serving a suspension over one or two such incidences"

Father Robert Echogu, the head of Soroti Catholic Diocese Social Communications confirmed on phone that he received the information that Opio was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital but he did not know what had happened to the priest.

Echogu also disclosed that Opio has been on suspension and has not been participating in Church activities for over a year. Opio was ordained on July 14, 2007. He served at Toroma Catholic parish in Katakwi district.
