18 killed in road accident in Rwanda

KIGALI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 18 people died while others were injured when a passenger taxi rammed into a trailer on the Kigali-Rwamagana road in eastern Rwanda on Monday.

The accident involved a Tanzania registered trailer.

There were 19 people aboard the passenger vehicle with only two survivors.

The bodies of the dead were taken to Rwamagana hospital mortuary for postmortem while two survivors were rushed to Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK).

The victims were from different parts of the country but investigations on the cause of the accident were still underway, according to Commissioner of Rwanda's Traffic and Road Safety, George Rumanzi.

According to police statistics, at least 200 people died and over 300 were seriously injured in road accidents between January and June this year in the country.

At least 34 percent of the victims were drivers and passengers, 30 percent pedestrians while motorcyclists and cyclists were 23 percent and 13 percent respectively.

Police attributed majority of the accidents to over speeding, reckless driving, and using telephones while driving. Enditem
