{UAH} Final showdown in the Burkina Faso, capital, Ouagadougou

Burkina Faso's army has just reminded those who were still doubting: the presidential guard is alone and against all.

After a weekend of mediation efforts by regional leaders failed to solve the crisis, the military has now decided to act. The next few hours will be decisive.

Everybody is bracing for a final showdown in the capital, Ouagadougou. The threat of serious fighting is real. The coup leader, Gen Gilbert Diendere (pictured above), has to decide whether he wants to avoid further bloodshed.

Army units could overwhelm the presidential guard with their numbers, but Gen Diendere's 1,000-strong elite unit is much better equipped and trained and could put up fierce resistance.
