A man has been found guilty of raping a fellow student on her first day of university.

Akeem Hassain, aged 20, from Merthyr Tydfi claimed sex between them in September 2014 was consensual.

The young woman told the jury at Cardiff Crown Court (pictured above) that she was so drunk on the night in question that she had to be helped back to her room.

Prosecutor Michael Jones told the court that she woke to find someone having sex with her.

Mr Jones told the jurors: 'He took advantage of a woman in a vulnerable state.

'She was not consenting and he did not reasonably think she was.

'The fact a woman is intoxicated gives no one the right to take advantage but it may give them the opportunity.'

Defence barrister, John Ryan, suggested she kissed Hassain and pulled him onto the bed during cross-examination, reports Wales Online.

To which she replied: ' That doesn't sound like me at all. It's not something I would do.'

Following a guilty verdict from the jury, Judge Phillip Richards denied Hassain's appeal for bail telling him: ' Regrettably I have no alternative to now remand you in custody.

He is due to be sentenced in two weeks.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
