LWENGO- Education authorities in Lwengo District have raised concern over the increase in the number of teachers that abandon their profession to join boda-boda business.

According to the education status report read by Mr Moses Nsereko, the chairperson of Lwengo Teachers Union, during activities to mark the World Teachers' Day celebrations on Monday, at least 10 teachers quit the profession in Lwengo District each year to join bodaboda business.

He said although many teachers offer services amid challenges like meagre and delayed payment of salaries, coupled with poor working condition, they end up leaving the profession for other relatively well -paying jobs.

"Some of the teachers have opted for boda- boda riding which is more paying than the current salary of an ordinary teacher in a primary school," he said
He said most teachers who are joining bodaboda business are those that borrowed salary loans from different commercial banks and are struggling to service the loans using their earnings.

Mr Nsereko asked government to replace the teachers.

"My appeal goes to government to ensure that it improves teachers' welfare to maintain them in service. It should also ask district local governments to fill the vacuums created by such abscondments," he added

Ms Doreen Ankunda, the education officer Lwengo District, applauded teachers for bearing the challenges, but urged them to take up other worthy income generating activities to supplement their salary.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
