Mr Ugly Zimbabwe pageant entry numbers grow
By This Is Africa on November 11, 2015 — The number of entries to compete in Zimbabwe's seemingly coveted Mr Ugly pageant finals this weekend has grown to 36, forcing the organisers to hold three different semi-finals so that they could trim down the number to 12 finalists
Organisers of the annual Mr Ugly Zimbabwe 'pageant' are having to make some adjustments to accommodate the growing number of entrants in the contest, reports Zimbabwe's NewsDay.
The competition will hold three different semi-finals in the capital Harare between 13 and 15 November to narrow down the 36 entrants to 12 finalists who will show off why they deserve the title.
Contest organiser, David Machowa, said funding has been secured from a local company to help stage the event after failing to do so last year due to financial bottlenecks.
"The adverts we flighted on social media resulted in the registration of 36 contestants. We were left with no choice but to conduct semi-finals so that we can have a small number for the finals," he said.
The winner in the last two contests was William Masvinu, a market porter whose face has now become something of a brand. Masvinu, 41, says his looks are a gift from God. Since first winning the contest in 2012, he has appeared in an advert and a local drama. However he's also lamented that he has not made as much money from his fame as he had hoped.
There does seem to be more such similar titles creeping up in media reports around the continent. Almost four months ago, we told you about Uganda's 'ugliest man', who had fathered his eight child with his second wife.
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
