Katongole turns down presidential advisor job
The former National Resistance Movement( NRM) party treasurer, Mr Singh Katongole has turned down an appointment as presidential advisor from the NRM chairman and President of the country Yoweri Museveni.
Katongole who was recently blocked by the party citing lack of valid academic documents had been appointed by the President who also is the Presidential flag bearer for the NRM. He (Katongole) however turned down the opportunity stating that the party is over looking his primary issues.
The new appointment was read by the NRM Secretary General, Ms Kasule Lumumba, during a consultative meeting that was organized on Wednesday evening in Mengo between Katongole and his supporters.
Ms Lumumba noted that following Mr Katongole's failure to be endorsed by the NRM secretariat on allegations that he didn't have academic papers, President Museveni decided to appoint him as his presidential advisor on Kampala affairs, a position he would use to support the people of Rubaga North.
"Its true Mr Katongole won the NRM primaries but following the Court injunction, the matter was not handled properly by the secretariat. I am sorry for failing to follow up the matter because it's me who heads the Secretariat. The president has therefore appointed Mr Singh Katongole as his advisor on Kampala affairs." Ms Lumumba said.
Lumumba however noted that Mr Katongole was free to contest as an independent and that as NRM, they couldn't block him. She also added that Mr Katongole's papers are valid, arguing that he studied with her husband Mr Patrick Lumumba at Kampala High School.
However, Mr Katongole said that he wouldn't take up the new job until his matter is sorted and that it's NRM that had failed to successfully handle his matter from the beginning. He revealed that he wouldn't betray his supporters and that he would go by what they say.
"I won the primaries with a landslide victory and Tanga Odoi gave me the NRM flag. He told me that someone had petitioned the secretariat, accusing me of using fake papers. I took my papers to him and the issue was sorted. What hurts is that they have given the flag to another person without even consulting me." Mr Katongole said.
He added: "I took my papers to UNEB and they were verified. Even the National Council for higher education confirmed the papers were valid."
On Tuesday, the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi announced that Mr Brian Tindyebwa, who had lost to Mr Katongole is the NRM Flag bearer for Rubaga North, stressing that Court had ruled out that the latter doesn't have academic qualifications.
Responding to Mr Katongole's claims, Mr Tindyebwa, who was nominated on Wednesday for the Rubaga North MP seat, said that he is ready to campaign, adding that the secretariat gave him green light.
