{UAH} Electoral Commission disqualifies Mao from contesting for MP seat

Electoral Commission  disqualifies Mao from contesting for  MP seat

Gulu- The Electoral Commission has disqualified Democratic Party president, Mr Norbert Mao from being nominated as a candidate for the Gulu Municipality parliamentary seat  because  he does not have  a national identity card which is a mandatory requirement for one to contest for a  political position.

While addressing  the people at Gulu District Council Hall shortly after being rejected on Wednesday, Mr Mao said the move by the Electoral Commission to block him from being nominated was a 'malicious' move by  the ruling National Resistance Movement government.

Mr Mao said he could not register for the national ID in time because he was still recuperating from illness at that time the Ministry of Internal Affairs was registering people to issue them with identity cards.

"After leaving the intensive care unit, I was too weak to register for the national ID. Later on I tried to meet Electoral Commission chairman Mr Kiggundu who told me that he could not help me because his hands were tied. When I met Aronda the minister of Internal affairs at that time, he told me that he would be travelling to Aouth African for a special duty and he would sort out my issue of the ID on returning back but unfortunately I never heard from him because he died," Mr Mao said.

He said: "I am personally not upset because I know how Museveni government works, it is the people of Gulu who wanted me to come back yet I was reluctant.  They should not cry for me but for themselves because it is them who were hungry for effective representatives".
