Dr Rugunda's meeting with the Nairobi-based Ugandan doctors comes at a time when the country is crippled by medical brain drain now standing at six per cent per year. Uganda's doctor-to-patient ratio was estimated at 1:24,725 in 2013, with a nurse-to-patient ratio at 1:11,000. The World Health Organisation recommends one physician per 1,000 people.
The Prime Minister, who is in Kenya representing President Museveni at the 10th World Trade Organisation ministerial conference, used the opportunity to reach out to various groups of Ugandans in the country.
"I welcome your endeavours to contribute and participate in improving of healthcare delivery in our country, and invite you to play an increasing role in shaping the direction of the health sector in our country, which is clearly improving," Dr Rugunda said.
Citing a number of examples, Dr Rugunda said government and the private sector are making substantial investments to ensure that essential healthcare and specialised medical services are provided in Uganda.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Trade, Ms Amelia Kyambadde, and Uganda's High Commissioner to Kenya, Ms Angelina Wapakhabulo.
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
