Kenyan politician and former lawmaker Isaac Kiprono Ruto registered a new political party, the Mashinani Development Party of Kenya, to challenge the Jubilee Alliance Party in elections next year, the Star reported.

Ruto, governor of Bomet county in western Kenya, was officially registered Dec. 24, the Nairobi-based newspaper reported. Bomet county Mayor David Sang was nominated to chair the party, which plans to contest its first by-election next month, it said.

Ruto, who chairs Kenya's Council of Governors, is seeking to wrestle support in Kenya's South Rift region from Deputy President William Ruto, weakening his grip in the key support base ahead of the elections, the Star said.

The opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy may support the Mashinani Development Party's bid for a senatorial seat in the county of Kericho by pulling out of the election, the newspaper said, citing an unidentified opposition politician.
