{UAH} Ocen/Pojim/WBK: KRA seizes 16 containers of Sh28 million contraband sugar at Kilindini Port

People;

How can Kakira Sugar find its way into Kenya freighted by sea going vessels via Kilindini harbour? Last year when the so-called "excess Ugandan sugar" for Kenyan market; I attributed this to the just concluded UG "elections" and I stand by it. Formerly this sugar used to make it into Kenya via Somalia........!

KRA seizes 16 containers of Sh28 million contraband sugar at Kilindini Port

The KRA impounded 16 containers of illegally imported sugar worth Sh28 million at Kilindini Port container terminal in Mombasa on Thursday.

The sugar in the containers imported by Ms Flowlmer Distribution Company was in bags labeled Kakira Sugar Company, said commissioner general John Njiraini.

"Kakira is based in Uganda and any imports originating from the firm would ideally enter Kenya by road or rail haulage through the land borders and not through the port via sea vessels," he said.
Njiraini said in a statement on Thursday that the goods had been declared as 'Dividing heads, part of grinding machine' and 'Truck boring mesh' instead of imported sugar, a restricted commodity.

"The continued importation of contraband sugar by unscrupulous traders undermines the government's objectives to promote the consumption of locally grown sugar," he noted.
Njiraini said investigations were launched and that the authority will continue enforcing customs regulations as part of a broader campaign to seal revenue leakages.

On February 4, Kenya Revenue Authority destroyed 130 containers of contraband sugar valued at Sh56 million, ethanol and rice at the Port of Mombasa.

The consignment, which included 18 containers of contraband sugar from Brazil, 49 containers of rice and 63 of ethanol worth Sh288 million was seized at several container freight stations.
The authority had earlier intercepted 40 containers of contraband goods including sugar and rice, at Compact Freight Systems in Miritini, Mombasa.
