Only luck saved us from defeat, says NRM party boss

MBARARA- The National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission deputy chairperson, Mr John Arimpa Kigyagi, has said it is only by luck that the party won the just concluded election.

Mr Kigyagi, who was speaking in an interview told in Mbarara Town on Monday, told Daily Monitor that the party has also detached itself from the electorate and failed to adjust its policies to provide systematic mobilisation programmes.

"We were only lucky that we had a good and sober candidate, otherwise the embarrassment would have been too much. The party relaxed and was not completely in charge," he said, adding, "some of the party messages have become irrelevant, giving the Opposition undue gains.
He also said that the failure to adjust to current trends has cost the party dearly.

"You begin telling youth of 30 years of peace, the Luweero War… and you expect them to understand? We need to do things differently, be relevant and keep in touch with the grassroots," Mr Kigyagi told Daily Monitor in an interview in Mbarara on Tuesday, adding it was only by luck that the NRM was not defeated in the just concluded elections.

He said those who won on the NRM ticket only used their individual strength but not the party's.

However, he expressed optimism saying the full time staff at the secretariat "will be able to recover and stabilise party activities.
